Prithvi'11(4-6 Feburary) was an initiative of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists(SEG)in association with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists(AAPG) and the Society of Petroleum Geophysicists(SPG) IIT Kharagpur Student Chapters, along with the students of the Department of Geology & Geophysics. Last year edition was a grand success with participation from external colleges exceeding 200, including students from over 15 colleges. The overall theme of our symposium was"The Interdependency of geology and geophysics in the sphere of exploration and production" which was brought out beautifully with the culmination of several enlightening guest lectures and events.
Almost all the lectures were aimed at bringing out the importance of this thought provoking theme. The result left us all with an initiative realisation that geology and geophysics are, indeed, like two pairs in a pod. Industry and academia today need an efficient integration of these two branches to succeed.

Problems will be from various topics such as Physical Geology, Seismic Section, Sequence Stratigraphy, Structural Geology etc.
As the whole world sleeps, students battle it out at the PRITHVI arena attempting to solve challenging questions designed to test their aptitude, intelligence and knowledge. Fast and effective thinking is what one needs to succeed in this one. Groups of 2-4 students will have a rough workout session with their brains to solve questions in this overnight competition, which were from various fields such as Physical Geology, Sequence Stratigraphy, Seismic Interpretation to Structural Geology………..The students will be given a night for coming up with their solutions.

Indiana Geones is an exciting event for young geoscientists who fashion themselves to be the modern Indiana Jones. A practical implementation of the students’ core learning is tested. The task involves using geophysical prospecting methods to locate objects whose expected geological properties are known. The instruments and data processing equipment are provided. The design of the survey/experiment and its successful execution is the challenge. Since this event is so directly linked with real-life applications and industry-related work, it is expected to generate a lot of interest among the students.

Geo-Spectrum is a Quiz competition that tests the participants’ quizzing aptitude based on a broad spectrum of subjects from Earth Sciences. This raw test of knowledge is the ideal platform for the brainy and smart to showcase their talent. Though the major emphasis is on exploration, it touches many other facets of Geo-Sciences with a very interesting format. It is held in two stages, the first round being a written one and the next with audio visuals.

Shastrarth is a panel discussion in which students nominated from various institutes participate in a discussion on a pre-defined topic. Such a platform where students engage in direct verbal confrontation has the potential spark for path-breaking innovations. An active discussion is possibly the most optimal way of reaching an effective consensus. It is judged by esteemed judges from among the guests and faculty of our Department.

This event requires the submission of a poster on some recently published (within a year) or ongoing research / projects in the field of Geo-Exploration. The perfect stage to reveal one’s research work, this event has the merits of being observed closely and generating substantial interest in the minds of our learned guests, alumni and faculty. Students are expected to come up with their best work and share it with this elite group of geoscientists and students aspiring to become the same. Such an interaction is bound to lead the greater good of learning. The precise topics will be displayed on our website very soon. The last date for submission of the abstract is 22 February. Authors of selected abstracts will be informed about their selection within a few days.

G-Wave is an online programming event which puts the participants’ programming parlance to test. This is where the coders put to test all their skills and make the necessary adjustments to translate their expertise to suit this event. Like any programming event, this has its own set of unique challenges to be overcome and it promises to be an enthralling event. We expect nation-wide participation, this being an online event and thereby offering the flexibility of using electronic media. The problem statement consists of Programming problems ranging from Signal Processing to Geophysical Fluid dynamics. It is released two weeks in advance on our website and the solutions are submitted online. Participants have the liberty to flex their programming muscle in C, MATLAB or FORTRAN and use any interpretation software like Grace, Paraview, GMT or MATLAB to display the results.
Problem Statement will be uploaded soon...
